This page is dedicated to close combat realism.

These pages are dedicated to hard-core self-defense, San Soo's direct
combat, the USMC's L.I.N.E. combat strategy, and more.

There are many martial arts, and they all put emphasis on a different part of their sport. Some emphasize kata, others technique, others kicks, others punches, others sparring. The arts on this page emphasize either the short self-defense takedown sequences that are most closely resembling a street confrontation, or the hard conditioning that is necessary for real contact. These sequences are like little scenarios of what would happen if you were attacked.
L.I.N.E, The Marine Corps' hand to hand combatStyles or platforms such as San Soo can become very effective, very early on. Here are some books and tapes that focus on direct, hardcore, take-em down now arts. Basically, all the martial arts that are traditional are complete (they have basics, kata, controlled sparring, full sparring, breaktests, etc.), but because of the preference of the original instructor, they emphasize one of the above. All the arts below emphasize controlled sparring (kihon) and to a lesser extent full contact sparring - the emphasis is on self-defense.

Ashihara Karate should round out this list, but with the
untimely passing of it's originator, it's books are already out of print,
and maybe even it's future is unsure. For more info, check

SAN SOO

Just like Pukulan in many ways is a stripped down version of Pencak Silat,
San Soo is a stripped down version of Choy Li Fut and Hung Gar and the like.
Probably unlike most of the other books here, these are also very suitable
to persons of slighter statue and women.
Check out this special page on The Women Of San Soo, and you'll get the point. ;^)
The official San Soo page is HERE.
A similar style is Hoy K. Lee's Jow Ga. Jow Ga is probably best known to readers of
Inside Kung Fu, where Scott Wong had a monthly column on it for years. It too is a
stripped down version, based on the powerful, forceful "take'm down hard"
Southern Chinese style of Kung Fu (Choy Li Fut, Hung Gar).
San Soo was also highly respected by Pukulan/Kuntao legend, Rudy ter Linden,
who trained with Jimmy Woo.

Kung Fu San Soo's Basic 45 Lessons
The term Basic 45 Lessons is really an understatement. Within these 45
well explained techniques you can develop an arsenal of skills that are invaluable.
This book thoroughly explains the details within each lesson so you will understand
why and how the technique is performed effectively. An introduction to Kung Fu San
Soo is included for those new to this devastating and highly effective art.
Ronald L. Gatewood is a direct student of Grandmaster Jimmy Woo.
Master Ron Gatewood is the editor of the San Soo Journal and has dedicated over
thirty years to the study of Kung Fu San Soo under Grand Master Jimmy H. Woo. He
possesses the largest film and video collection on Kung Fu San Soo in existence.

MUAY THAI (THAI BOXING)

Sometimes also mistakenly called Thai Kickboxing (Kickboxing was inspired by Muay Thai, not the other way around). The thing about Muay Thai is that there are limited number of extremely powerful techniques, that are trained over and over, both with shadow boxing, against pads and against it's unique, six feet tall heavy bags, creating great endurance, highly effective basic techniques, and the ability to actually apply them. Everything you train is applied in the ring. Characteristic techniques of Muay Thai are it's low kicks, it's clinching, and it's free use of elbows. Recommended!!

Close-Quarter Combat
by Staff Sergeant, Professor Leonard Holifield

Mention the name "Holifield" in military circles and your bound to hear the word
"Awesome". With over 30 years martial arts and close-quarter combat experience,
Professor Holifield literally rewrote the way the U.S. Army trains in hand-to-hand
combat. An 8th degree black belt, Professor Holifield is considered one of the worlds
leading authorities on military combatives. I am honored to share my work with you. I
wrote Close-Quarter Combat "A Soldiers Guide to Hand-to-Hand Combat" as a basic
reference guide on close quarter combat tactics geared for military personnel. As the
former Chief Combatives Instructor to the United States Army from 1987 to 1997, I
have had the unique opportunity to train hundreds of active duty military personnel on
what works and what doesn't work in a close-quarter combat situation. This book was
written to give you the reader, a basic fundamental understanding of hand-to-hand
combat while introducing you to a variety of effective hand-to-hand combat techniques.

MARC "THE ANIMAL" MACYOUNG

Taking it to the street: Making your martial art street effective
Taking it to the street: Making your martial art street effective
" Most real fights are short, fast and brutal. And there are no rules. The martial artist who thinks he's trained to handle what's coming may be in for a painful surprise. But this isn't one of those books about bringing your martial art up to street speed that rips on everything you've worked so hard to learn. It's a book on taking your moves and making them fast, fanged and fierce enough to stand up to a surprise attack. "

Safe in the City : A Streetwise Guide to Avoid Being Robbed, Raped, Ripped Off, or Run over

" This is an entertaining street-level look at how crimes are really committed in America's cities. Chris and Animal use their NY-L.A. experience to help you learn the games carjackers, muggers, "gangstas," rapists, junkies and conmen play-and how to avoid them. "

Street E & E : Evading, Escaping, and Other Ways to Save Your Ass When Things Get Ugly

Here Animal tells you how to survive when you're outflanked and outgunned. Rather than clashing head-on with every problem that comes along, you need to learn to apply hit-and-run tactics, utilize the environment and use your enemies' weaknesses against them.

Pool Cues, Beer Bottles, and Baseball Bats : Animal's Guide to Improvised Weapons for Self-Defense and Survival

" Would you admit to getting your ass kicked with a hairbrush? Animal would, because as a seasoned veteran
of streetfighting, he knows it can happen. Learn to pick up damn near anything and use it to survive. "

Knives, Knife Fighting, and Related Hassles : How to Survive a Real Knife Fight

" Knife fighting is ugly business, so you'd better know what you're doing if you ever find yourself in one. This book will show you the down-and-dirty reality of knife fighting, from choosing the best knife to devious street tricks commonly used to get in the first strike. "

Floor Fighting : Stompings, Maimings, and Other Things to Avoid When a Fight Goes to the Ground

"  Real fights almost always end up on the ground, where there's the ever-present danger of getting stomped, stabbed or worse. Animal shows you the necessary jerking, jabbing, gouging and biting nastiness you need to know to fight effectively once you're on the floor. "
